Sony Google TV Blu-ray player drops OnLive support

July 3rd, 2012

Sony has axed support for OnLive game playback on its newest Google TV-powered Blu-ray player. Here’s the kicker – the player hasn’t even shipped yet; it isn’t due to release until July 9. But after the company announced that it will acquire Gaikai – an OnLive rival – it seems like an infinitely understandable decision. Incidentally, Sony never confirmed any sort of OnLive partnership.

However, it was discovered that in the technical specifications and documentation for the impending Blu-ray device, Sony listed OnLive connectivity as an optional accessory. Now, however, the company has wiped any reference to OnLive in connection to the player. What most likely happened was that Sony was working on the Gaikai deal behind closed doors, but wanted to have the OnLive compatibility there just in case.

Or, it could very well be that the team working on the Google TV Blu-ray player had no clue about Gaikai and so they just put OnLive connectivity there since it is compatible with Google TV products. It will be interesting to see Sony specifically exclude one of the newest Google TV services from a Google TV product, but that’s the way the business world works.

Google TV tipped for European launch in September

April 3rd, 2012

If you’re desperately in love with the idea of Google TV, but haven’t been able to get in on the action due to being confined to Europe, then there’s good news. According to a new report, Google plans to bring Google TV based products to Europe starting from September. Sony is planning to bring two products, although there’s no word on if other Google TV partners will be supplying their own wares.

The first of Sony’s products will include a Google TV set top box, which will retail for around €200 (~$266). The second will have Google TV integrated into a Blu-ray player, and that product is expected to sell for around €300 (~$400). Both products will launch in France, with releases in the UK, Spain, and Germany also expected.

Both Sony products are said to have Google Play buttons included on the remote controls, allowing users to jump directly into the store to purchase apps, games, and movies. Sony will also include their own services on the device, such as Music Unlimited.

The second wave of Google TV products is expected to go on sale in the United States later this year, from OEMs such as Samsung, LG, and Sony. The new products will move away from Intel’s chipset to an ARM-based solution, expected to drive costs down. Having said that, the quoted price for Sony’s new products in Europe still seems high to us.

Report: Google TV coming to Europe in September

April 3rd, 2012

Report: Google TV coming to Europe in SeptemberSony is making some more definitive statements on its plans to bring Google TV across to Europe. According to financial paper, Les Échos, Sony France’s marketing director said that two devices, a set-top box, priced at €200 ($266) and a Blu-ray player, selling for €300 ($399), will launch in France this September. The paper reports that it could launch across the UK, Spain and Germany at the same time. Sony’s Stephane Labrousse added that remotes for the new devices would also include a dedicated Android Market Google Play button to access the Android progenitor’s apps and media content. The Japanese manufacturer’s own Music Unlimited service will also be baked inside. Phew. There’s no word just yet on whether these are the older Intel-based models or the new, possibly cheaper, ARM range set to ship later this year. However, we expect to hear plenty more noise from Sony on its Smart TV intentions over the next few months.
