Engadget HD Podcast 337 - 02.19.2013

We’re getting the band back together. After we welcome Ryan Block and Peter Rojas back to the fold, we dig into all the news that came out of the AllThingsD conference last week. Sony, Dish, Microsoft, Intel and others had plenty to say, but did we believe everything we heard? We’re also on the bleeding edge of a new display technology as OLED HDTVs hit the streets, so we’ll make our best guess as to whether mainstream pricing is in the near future. Finally, several connected TV platforms have updates, and the battle for content continues to heat up with customers stuck in the middle — press play to find out all the details.

FCC filing reveals Apple TV model A1469 with slightly smaller dimensions (update: new antenna, CPU too?)

January 30th, 2013

Apple TV clears the FCC,

We don’t generally find surprises from Apple in the daily stream of FCC documents and test reports, but a new filing published today seems to suggest that a new Apple TV model of some sort could be on the way. While the diagram pictured above doesn’t suggest any major changes to the device’s appearance, it does list some slightly smaller measurements: 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model. That’s certainly not the biggest of differences, but the measurements in previous Apple FCC filings have been spot on. The model number, A1469, is also one that we haven’t seen before, but the documents unfortunately don’t offer much else in the way of details (only confirmation of the same WiFi capabilities as the current-gen Apple TV).

As MacRumors noted yesterday, a look at the download options for the latest Apple TV software update also revealed a new “AppleTV3,2″ model, which it speculated could be an international version of the device — although it of course remains to be seen if it and this model are one and the same. For now, you can get a closer look at the filing yourself at the source link.

Update: Anandtech has peeked through the filings and the source code, finding a new single antenna setup that follows the design of other iDevices, and reference to an updated A5X SoC at its heart.

Netgear NeoTV PRIME with Google TV and NeoTV SlingPlayer deal revealed

January 7th, 2013

Netgear has pushed out a new Google TV box at CES 2013 this week, the NeoTV PRIME (GTV100), as well as new home streaming to its NeoTV range thanks to a deal with Slingbox. The PRIME supports all the usual Google TV apps, as well as playback of local media via its USB port.

Connectivity includes WiFi b/g/n and a 10/100 ethernet port, as well as an HDMI port. The twin-sided remote hooks up vie Bluetooth. Maximum video output resolution is 1080p.

There’s also streaming from Android phones using the aVia media app, which Netgear will be preloading on the NeoTV PRIME, and the PrimeTime app for holistic search of content across live TV, app, or web. The Prime’s remote, meanwhile, has an integrated keyboard for swifter search, plus a trackpad and directional pad.

As for the SlingPlayer integration, Netgear’s deal with the company means users will be able to stream content to a NeoTV box, such as from the recently announced range priced from $49.99. It’s also loaded on the new PRIME version.

The Netgear NeoTV PRIME is on sale from today, priced at $129.99.

ASUS and others to show off new Google TV devices at CES 2013

January 4th, 2013

Google may not have had the 2012 they wanted with their Google TV platform, but it looks like they’re going to start things off right in 2013, with a slew of new Google TV devices being unveiled at CES 2013 next week. ASUS, as well as Hisense and TCL, all three of which will be new to the platform, but companies like LG, Vizio, and Sony will also be showing new devices next week as well.

Google-TV

In a blog post on the official Google TV blog, the company announced that a handful of companies will be showing off new Google TV devices, including ASUS, who are new to the platform. Google says these companies “will show off the newest Google TV platform,” including “set-top boxes, integrated TVs, and IPTV boxes.”

Of course, the most notable company in the mix is ASUS, who is already rumored to release the Qube, which made its way through the FCC back in November. The Qube may also be part of Google’s Nexus lineup, which would make it the flagship Google TV device. It certainly wouldn’t be surprising, since ASUS is the company behind Google’s ever-popular Nexus 7 tablet.

As far as new partners, Google says it has nine partners in total for the TV software, with the major holdouts being Samsung (which has previously announced Google TV products, but haven’t yet released anything) and Panasonic. Of course, we’ll be there at CES 2013 all next week to bring you the latest coverage.

Google bringing YouTube Android app pairing, updated UI to more TVs

January 3rd, 2013

Google updated its YouTube app for Android back in November to allow for pairing with TVs equipped with Google TV, and it looks we’ll soon be seeing quite a few more sets ready to work with your smartphone or tablet. The company confirmed today that new TVs from Bang & Olufsen, LG, Panasonic and Sony will be making their debut at CES, with additional sets and set-top boxes coming from Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, Western Digital and others over the course of 2013. In related news, Google’s announced that its new UI for YouTube on TV — previously seen on the Wii U and PlayStation 3 — will also be featured on those new devices, offering full 1080p videos and a fairly minimalist interface. You can check out a quick video of how the pairing works after the break.
